What is historic in Batu Pahat?

Without fail, residents of Batu Pahat will say “that well / perigi at Minyak Beku”.

So, what is this Perigi all about? It is just a tiny little well, but it seems to have a significant past.

It was believed that this ancient landmark was dug up in the 15th century by Siamese Army to collect fresh water. The army was led by Admiral Awi Di Chu who camped in Batu Pahat before attacking Malacca. It was believed the year was 1456 and they wanted to attack Malacca for the second time, which was under the rule of Sultan Mudzafar Shah. The Siamese army failed to attack Malacca.  

Batu Pahat got its name from a well?

Some say that this is how Batu Pahat got its name. The area consist of hard rock, and the well was chiselled out of the hard rocks in the area. Thus the name Batu Pahat which means Chiselled Rock.

Where is it? How to get there?

It is located at Minyak Beku Beach (Pantai Minyak Beku), which is around 8 KM away from Batu Pahat town. If you are in town, head towards Jalan Ampuan from Jalan Rahmat (Telekom Malaysia Building), follow the roadsigns to Minyak Beku. You will drive along a windy road, you will reach the end of the road which is right at before the seawater of the Straits of Malacca.
