2 days ago, I got a surprise email from Larry Pupkiewicz who is from the US, but lived in Batu Pahat during 1975-1976. He taught Form 4 Math at Sekolah Datuk Bentara Luar.
He said a teacher by the name of Mohd Husini bin Mohd Tahir gave him this postcard, a view of Batu Pahat from the sky. It was a precious card to him, but he gave it to Larry anyway. Larry says he wants to share it with all the BP folks. So here it is…
There’s no date on the postcard, but it is by Airfoto, 381 Jalan Pudu, KL.

For a bigger size picture, please click here.
Can you all recognise the town?
Larry wants to find out more about SDBL. Anyone has anything to add, just drop your comments here, or go to the Forum and join in the discussion there. Maybe some of you out there might know Larry and Mohd Husini!

If you ask around town the market place about the famous Asam Pedas, there are two stalls that people will say it’s the best.
One is at the big tree opposite the market clock tower, the other one is just across the street – beside the river.
Which one is the best? Why not go try it yourself?
I went to this one, because it was recommended by Nazariah (from KT Stall) from yesterday’s post. So we decided to try it.
If you wonder how it looks, look out for this sign, I am sure you wont miss it! Big Botak word.

The lady serving dishing out the ikan merah asam pedas.

Sorry, this picture a bit blur…

Now, look at this. I feel like having some now.

Go try try…
Visitors to Batu Pahat, most of the food in BP is simply delicious. You might want to ‘tapow’ back!
It opens from 4 AM to 4 PM. (yes, 4 AM!!)
The Ikan Merah cost $3
The meal I had, 2 pieces of fish (1 tapow for my Dad), 1 rice and 1 teh kosong – $8

If you like non oily, yet crispy Roti Canai, come to this stall. It’s called the KT Stall. KT stands for Kak Timah, short for Fatimah. I do not usually like to eat Canai, but this one taste quite good!
It’s going to be pictures galore for this post.
This is Encik Zubir, the store owner. He is going to demo the way to make canai the correct way.

What’s the correct way? Do it with all your heart for your customers.

It radiates through his smile too!

There you go, in just a few flips, the dough is ready to be pan fried.

Next the daughter, Nazariah takes over the frying of the canai. (Kak Timah is Nazariah’s mother’s name)

But wait, she also wants to demo her dough flipping skills. So, she took up a piece of dough and flips it too!

Not bad eh? Wah Seh!
Oops… I forgot to ask the name of the man who took over the frying. (Let’s call him Mr X)

The canai being pan fried. Can’t wait to taste it!

But wait, Mr X also an expert! He also wants to demo his skills!
Wah seh.. Pose some more for me!

Stylo or not?

Next Nazariah demonstrates her teh tarik skill.

At last, my canai is served. Light, fluffy and crispy.

It’s served with a light curry.

Why not another shot of the canai? Here it goes…

I shall end the post today with the Teh Tarik.

Opening hours: It opens very early in the morning and closes at around noon time.
How much does it cost? $1.50 for teh tarik and roti kosong
It’s just a simple hut and located beside the stalls selling pisang opposite the market.
For people from an older generation, it’s located where the Old Batu Pahat Jetty is.
(The old jetty foundation can still be seen today)

The moment Mr Mahalingam stops his cart, you can see in a few minutes crowd that gathers to buy his Terigu Pulut.
Mum and I were driving along Jalan Sultanah when mum spotted him. We already past his cart, we had to drive one big round, turn into Jalan Rahmat and drive back to Jalan Sultanah. He was ‘parked’ beside Ai Chun. When we arrived, there was already a few persons queuing.
I took out my camera, he saw my camera, thinking I am a paparazzi, and kept looking down. Haha…
Here he is packing a pack of delicacy for this lady in blue.

This is him scooping the yummylicious stuff from the container.

A package cost 1 dollar. After getting up the car, I realised I did not get his name. So I went down to ask for his name. ‘Mr Mahalingam’, he said.
When we got home, Mum and Dad were discussing whether this is the 1st or 2nd generation. We concluded this is the 2nd generation because Mr Mahalingam looks a little different from what my parents remembered.
If you want to see more pictures, tigersden has also posted pictures in the Forum. I have also added more pictures there. This is a teaser to get you to visit the forum
