June 2007

Thanks to Mr Chew Yang Hua, who has emailed me some old photos of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce (CCC), Batu Pahat taken in the 1950s. The following photos were taken by Yang Hua’s father.

In the insert is the photo of Mr Chew Kee, who built the CCC in the 1930s. I think it was completed in 1931, by looking at the current building photo that has a 1931 on it. (Skip to the current building photo here)

Playing spot the difference, I see that the flag pole has been removed from the present building.

Yang Hua also attached this photo in his email. Yang Hua’s father, Chew Yan Han is standing 2nd to the right.
If you happened to know people in this photo, maybe you are some long lost relative or family friends of Chew Yang Hua!

Thanks again to Mr Chew for his photo contribution!

Mr Larry Pupkiewicz, if you remembered contributed photos of the Aeriel View of BP from a postcard.

A few days ago, he sent me more photos. Here’s a gift to all readers from Larry.
I recognize some places but not all. Hey, some of the pictures might be taken when I am negative years old!

The photos sent had a tint of yellow on them, I have removed them digitally and enlarge the photos as well, hopefully it is easier on the eyes now.

It’s becoming hip to have citizen journalism nowadays. Jump in the bandwagon and contribute your thoughts. The picture are numbered, just refer to the numbers and drop your words of wisdom. I am sure most of you know more than I do.

Enjoy these first while I continue to digitally ‘enhanced’ the rest of the photos.
Thanks Larry.

You can find a Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ismail in almost every town in Johor.

There’s one in Johor Bahru, Muar, Kluang, Pontian, Kota Tinggi, etc… and of course Batu Pahat.
Many events are held here, weddings, exhibitions, singing competitions etc….

I remember my younger sis joining a singing competition here, I think it was organised by Yamaha Music School which was under Me Sing Music Centre. She sang “Doe a Deer, a female deer” from The Sound of Music. I think she won too!

Let me zoom in…

Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ismail

Anyone knows the history of it? It would be great to find out more.

This photo was sent to me by John Chan, the secretariat of the upcoming Class of 1965 High School Reunion.

Well, this is something new to me. I had to ask John if it’s labeled correctly haha..

Quoting from John’s email to me:

The High School of the past had a primary section and in 1957, half of the students were transfered to the new Limpoon Primary School whilst some stayed back in High School. One of them that went over to Limpoon Primary was none other than the present Health Minister. In 1961, all those from Limpoon Primary returned to High School to continue their secondary education.

This is the class of Standard 1, 1955 of High School Primary.
Anyone reading this spot yourself in the photo? I am sure John would love to touch base with you!
