I love Asam Pedas and here’s another post on Asam Pedas that taste much better than the previous post.
Have you ever wished that there’s a food place where you can just sit down, and the food will just appear in front of you. You do not want to crack your brain thinking what should I eat, hopeing that they just serve you delicious food.
Well, there’s such a stall in Batu Pahat. In a shack near the fish section of the Pasar Besar, just along a sidewalk, there’s this stall selling Asam Pedas that does exactly that. It’s always pack with people. You share the tables with others. When you spot a vacant seat, go and take a seat. After you sit down, you will notice that a plate of white rice placed in front of you. Wait for a few more seconds, a plate of Ikan Cencaru Asam Pedas appears in front of you!
The Asam Pedas at this stall is cooked using recycled material (discarded wooden boxes). Depending on how you view it, some might say they have zero carbon footprint. They use disposed material for fuel. Others think it’s contributing to green house gases. It’s all up to you to make you own stand. But sitting down here and eating is quite a nice experience.

Mum and I sat found two empty seats at one table and sat down. Since it was two persons, we had two fish served to us.
By default it’s Ikan Cencaru (Malay) / Torpedo Scud (English) / Ngee Ber (Hokkien). Yes, it’s cheap fish, but they taste good!
Let me warn you, be careful! It’s very hot! Don’t burn your tongue by immediately trying the sauce in your mouth! If you do, your tongue will be numb for a while and you won’t enjoy your food.
The fish’s fresh because it’s straight from the fish mongers beside them. The Asam Pedas is sour enough and spicy enough too. It’s a tad oily, so just avoid the oil. It’s quite fragrant.

Eat it with rice and you can be quite satisfied. Two plates of rice, two fish, 2 drinks, it cost less than RM10. Can’t really remember the exact price. There are other things to eat, but I already had breakfast, so we only at the fish. (My secret quest to try out all the Asam Pedas places in BP. haha)

After having a satisfying Asam Pedas we walked into the market. Just a few steps away from the makan place, you see lots of Ikan Cencaru on metal trays for sale. Took this photo from our a fishmonger we sometimes buy fish from. He said the Nyee Ber is not so nice today. So we bought other fish instead.

So, around the Pasar Besar, I now know of 3 nice Asam Pedas places.

If you are drive past Jalan Bakau Condong, at the Kampung Merdeka junction you will see this big signboard that says Asam Pedas Mr P. The big signboard is really eye catching.
Well, one fine day, mum and I decided to give it a try to see if there’s anything to shout about. (The big sign’s always shouting to us, eat me! haha)

We parked our car along Jalan Wan Idris, just beside the house-that-turned-into-a-restaurant.
There was a few people eating the Asam Pedas on a hot Friday afternoon.

Asked if we wanted the head, body or tail, we opted for the tail of the Ikan Merah.
The verdict, the fish is not super fresh as we would have liked it will be. Also, the Asam Pedas was not sour or spicy enough for us. This version is for those who can’t take too spicy or sour stuff. We would have prefer if they had more ‘salted vegetables’ too.

This is the fried onion egg that we also ordered. A bit generous with the oil, but to cook the egg this style, I guess they have to have enough oil.

Two of us, two plates of rice, an onion egg, a fish tail and 2 drinks.
I can’t really remember the price, but from my failing memory it was a bit less than RM20.

If you want fiery and flavourful Asam Pedas, go to the one near the Pasar Besar. Come here only if you need your Asam Pedas fix at midnight where there’s none available elsewhere.

Talk about Cendol, and most people in BP will point you to the Cendol Stall at Jalan Engan. But not everyone thinks that it’s the best stall around. This other stall in “Pasar Besar” is quite popular and quite good too.
This stall only operates in the mornings. If you are a bit late, you might not get to taste it at all. This stall is “Halim Cendol”, at the entrance of the market that’s nearer to Jalan Ibrahim. The guy serving there is not Halim. He said it’s his brother’s stall and he is helping out. So I presume his brother is Halim?

The shop in Jalan Engan has one type of Cendol, but here at Halim, there are two choices.
Regular Cendol and Cendol Kacang. (if you want a fanciful name, call it Azuki Beans Cendol, it suddenly sounds so Japanese doesn’t it?)
Both are only RM1 per serving.

I tried the Cendol Kacang. If you like Red Bean, try this. It blends in rather well with the cendol.
They are generous with the ‘Gula Melaka’ too. (It’s a combi of two kinds of sweet stuff, so if you do not have a sweet tooth, ask for ‘less sweet’).

This is the original version. Mum thinks that cendol should be eaten as cendol with no adulteration.

I suddenly feel like having a bowl right now!

The police seems to be quite efficient nowadays?
We have heard of many break in stories in BP. Got to be careful and also remember to call the police first if something happens.

Senator foils burglars who broke into his house
By : Rizalman Hammim
BATU PAHAT, Mon:
Quick action by Senator Osman Bongsu in calling the police prevented his house from being broken into by two burglars in the early hours of Friday.
In the 4.20am incident, the two burglars had already cut through the front grill of the senator’s house in Taman Evergreen here when his wife was awakened by some noise and she woke him.
He immediately called the police when he realised what was happening. Osman, his wife and their five children were at home at the time of the incident.
Batu Pahat police chief Assistant Commissioner Ibrahim Mohd Aris said police reacted quickly to Osman’s call and within 10 minutes arrived at his house. The burglars, aged 24 and 25, who tried to run towards a nearby bush were arrested.
“We seized several tools for house breaking and a knife. One of the suspects is an illegal immigrant while the other entered the country legally.
“Following interrogations the burglars confessed that they were involved in another 14 cases of house breaking in Batu Pahat and five in Malacca,” Ibrahim said at a Press conference here yesterday.
“I would like to advice anyone in such situations to immediately call the police so that we can act quickly, instead of calling their relatives,” Ibrahim said.
In another case, police arrested two suspects after they stopped their car and found several tools used for house breaking and robbery, including a cutter, metal files and screw drivers.
“Initial investigation showed that both suspects, aged 24 and 34, had previous criminal records and we believe with the arrests, we have managed to solve several house breaking cases,” said Ibrahim.
The car used by the suspects was also found to be fitted with false number plates. A check also indicated that it was reported stolen in Pandan Indah, Selangor.
