What is historic in Batu Pahat?
Without fail, residents of Batu Pahat will say “that well / perigi at Minyak Beku”.
So, what is this Perigi all about? It is just a tiny little well, but it seems to have a significant past.
It was believed that this ancient landmark was dug up in the 15th century by Siamese Army to collect fresh water. The army was led by Admiral Awi Di Chu who camped in Batu Pahat before attacking Malacca. It was believed the year was 1456 and they wanted to attack Malacca for the second time, which was under the rule of Sultan Mudzafar Shah. The Siamese army failed to attack Malacca.
Batu Pahat got its name from a well?
Some say that this is how Batu Pahat got its name. The area consist of hard rock, and the well was chiselled out of the hard rocks in the area. Thus the name Batu Pahat which means Chiselled Rock.
Where is it? How to get there?
It is located at Minyak Beku Beach (Pantai Minyak Beku), which is around 8 KM away from Batu Pahat town. If you are in town, head towards Jalan Ampuan from Jalan Rahmat (Telekom Malaysia Building), follow the roadsigns to Minyak Beku. You will drive along a windy road, you will reach the end of the road which is right at before the seawater of the Straits of Malacca.
Any pictures of Perigi Batu Pahat?
This tells you it is the Perigi.
The plaque telling you a bit of history about the Perigi.
This is the perigi itself.

The tree that has been in existence since god knows when. Maybe planted by the people who founded BP.
I still can’t find my BP history notes, only manage to get the history of High School (read about it in the forums)

Oh, that famous tree at Simpang Rantai roundabout….
Yeah, must be a very old tree cos’ when my mum came from China to BP during the early 30s, it was already there…..
During my very young days, there was a small booth under the tree with a lady in it, she was selling social welfare lottery tickets!!

I found a very interesting information on Batu Pahat’s original name recently……..
According to a chapter in the Hikayat Abdullah which described the destruction of the A Famosa in Malacca, Abdullah wrote,
[The appearance of the Fort as I had noted it during my walks and inside the place was as follows. There were big blocks of granite, dark brown in colour, some six feet and others about three feet long. The stonework was smooth and flat as if it had been planed. I have heard that the stones were fashioned by Chinese masons from Batu Pahat under the orders of the Portuguese and for that reason the place is called "Chiselled Stone" to this day.]
Wonder if Abdullah’s version is correct?
