BATU PAHAT: The process to develop a new landfill at Bukit Payong is under way.
Bandar Penggaram assemblyman Datuk Koh Chee Chai said the facility costing RM20mil, would be built on a 40ha plot and be ready by the end of next year.
“This is the first landfill for Batu Pahat and is expected to start operating in early 2014.
“Currently, all waste collection from the district are sent to the Simpang Renggam dumpsite, which is almost at its maximum capacity.
“Due to the increasing population and escalating amount of waste, we have to find a solution to resolve it as Batu Pahat has no landfill or dumpsite,” he said.
Koh added that land acquisition for the project was completed and the project had entered its evaluation stage which is expected to be completed in September.
“Construction of the landfill will begin after the evaluation works is done,” he added.
The project site is situated on a former agricultural plot located at some 6km away from the district’s residential area.
The new landfill, once operational, it would also receive waste collection from Yong Peng, Labis, Kluang and Segamat.
In a separate development, Koh officiated 12 Rela platoons from Batu Pahat district five and witnessed the promotion of 78 personnel at Kampung Merdeka last week.
Rela chief Captain Teo Kay Chong said the Rela platoons were restructured and reorganised to be more effective in carrying out their duties.
“Currently, we have about 400 members and each platoon has at least 33 members,” he said and adding that Batu Pahat district five Rela platoon also covers Bandar Penggaram.

Somehow I always relate Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek to improving the drainage and helping to reduce the flood situation in BP.
As for Datuk Koh Chee Chai, he is always talking about waste disposal in his speeches wherever he goes. So I guess before his term is over he finally got something to his name, a landfill.
Any opinions from residents can forward to me at mbmy63@yahoo.com…doing study on the impact on the project..thnk you…
