Mohd Shah’s Baryani is so famous that people from all over Malaysia will stop over to eat.
(Before I go on, I realise that the spelling Baryani, Bariani, Beryani, Beriyani is all different in all the different photos! I guess they can’t determine which is the spelling they want, so they just hamtam everything lah. Each signboard put one different spelling. haha….)
You all should know by now, mum and I have this hobby of going around eating and tasting food. Adik from UK balik, of course we bring her to eat Nasi Baryani lah.
The stall is founded by owner Haji Mohd Esa’s father, Mohd Shah in 1986.
Anyway, the stall is located at Kompleks Niaga Benteng Peserai. It’s right opposite the Putra Specialist Hospital (prev known as Southern Hospital). From town, cross the bridge over the Batu Pahat river.
After driving in, you would see this signboard. How to miss? Even if you don’t know which stall it is, take a seat, then look where everyone goes. It is that stall.

Anyway, at the entrance you will see this sign. (ey, people leh, no queue ah?)

Or people queuing like this. (macam ini baru betul kan?)

The moment you walk into this simple stall, you will see pots and pots of mutton and chicken and of course the Nasi Baryani.

This pot is almost empty.

When the guy saw that I was taking photo, he said, take this pot instead. Wah. another huge pot of kambing.

How much does it cost, you will ask?

This is how it looks when the guy scoops it. The meat below, and the rice over it.

Of course they are also known for their pickle / Acar Buah. It’s tasty I tell you. This is what I ate. Nasi Baryani Kambing with a bottle of Jeruk.

The drinks next door, and the nasi you pay at the counter just inside this shop. So, you can order your drinks next door first, then order the food here, then pay together. Or pay first and then go next door. It’s all the same….

I think your fact is wrong.
Md Shah never worked for the Sultan. He was formerly a labourer with the local councill.
My dad was the late Imam for the Jalan Ampuan District Mosque and he knew of Mat Shah’s ability to cook fine Johor Baryani Gam, part timing for Malay weddings.
My dad invited him regularly to cook for the mosque’s religious occasion like the Prophet’s Birthday and special Malam Jumaat post prayers makan.
Then he was building his reputation and began to set up a stall at Peserai. WHen he was about to quit the Town COuncill labour job to do his baryani business but was denied for the selfish reason that he could stop cooking for the Masjid and Local District fucntions.
A deal was struck and he continued to work but reassinged to maintain and clean the area around his stall and shop. He agreed to avil himself for the district and mosque function.
This is the untold story.
His wife died few years back in Mecca during her trip to Haj. Just heard he remarried.
He is a fine example of success from being sincere and honest working man.

i think at this moment, there are a few nasi beriani stall around batu pahat and i’m not a big fans beriani Mohd Shah.

For me, Shah’s is over-rated. I always go to Nasi Beriani Power in Taman Soga.

I suggest that we stick to the Dewan Bahasa spelling – BERIANI. As for Shah’s Beriani is over-rated, I beg to disagree. For RM4.50 what can we expect. If you want to get the ‘full taste’ get yourself invited to one of the majlis perkahwinan where the budget is big enough to allow Shah to include all the expensive ingredients.

This is another fact and true story of Md.Shah whom I know him personally. One during 60′s and 70′ there was a very well known Beriyani Shop in town at Jalan Rahmat called LATIFF RESTAURANT. In that restaurant there worked a mamak called Hamid Sultan. This Hamid Sultan resigned from the restaurant as a chief cook and went to work in another mamak sundry shop called SYARIKAT ISMAIL YAHYA which is now situated in Jalan Ibrahim. Presently it is called as Syarikat SIY SDN.BHD.
Md.Shah used to patronize this shop for his groceries and somehow managed to learn the skill of cooking the best BERIYANI which is actually the recipe came from this mamak. The real flavor and taste is actually from the mamak because as a MALAY he will never been able to obtain that preculiar Indian taste as we all know very well, that actually NASI BERIYANI came to Malaysian people tongue through the INDIAN MAMAKS.

My kampung is in BP…Everytime when we went back to kampung, going to Md Shah is a must…Hmm is there a different between Nasi Baryani Md Shah and Nasi Baryani Power in Taman Soga? I rarely ate the Power one…hehe..

The best beriani in Johor & Singapore , some say even in Batam.Nothing else can compare with it … I give it 10/10 simply because it is the best value for money , for its price and taste.

His BERIYANI is nice, but not the place. Just look around. I took some of my friends from Singapore. They canceled the order just because of the poor hygiene. Stray cats everywhere, dirty floor with litters around, dirty stains on wall. I suggest better pack and eat.
Lousy Majlis never take initiative on maintenance of the building.

1 small advice. People with heart problems please beware when eating nasi beriyani kambing. The cholesterol level is rock high and may lead to artery blockages so for this I would rather advice to order with less gravy and dish changed to ayam. Make sure to drink a glass of hot teh o limau pekat. Lime has a nature in cleaning sticky oil.

Can’t resist the temptation to join in the BERIANI talk. Recently was taken to a Mamak shop in Seremban. The whole thing came in a pretty metal pot. I ordered the whole pot for myself thinking there must be the huge mutton with bone (80%bone20%meat) hidden in it. To my surprise, the rice and meat were cooked together (no wonder the long wait). And there were only small pieces of mutton (minus the bone) in it! Almost died from overeating the whole pot of BERIANI. Didn’t actually mind it because it was really delicious, especially the specially freshly cooked rice. Emm…. i still think the Batu Pahat BERIANI is still best in its own way – both Taman Soga and Md Shah oso nice… BTW, heard that the Soga boss was formerly an ex-worker with Md Shah. Then another ex-worker from Soga came out and buka another BERIANI kedai in Taman Bukit Pasir.

The best BERIYANI will be of cooked with highest quality BASMATHI Rice from Pakistan. The problem is that rice in our Malaysia is so expensive compared to Singapore.

This has got to be my favourite food of all time. I’m no longer in Bee Pee but everytime i go back, Shah’s Beriyani is the first place i go to.
Last year I stopped in BP with my whole family and as we didn’t get to BP before the shop closed, I had my dad go out and bungkus some for us and we had it at the hotel. Even my australian born nieces loved it.
I’m homesick just looking at the picture of the Beriyani.
Even if this was at Rm10 per serve, I would pay it anyday
Keep up the good work on reviewing these places to eat as I miss them dearly and each blog just makes me reminiscence of my childhood in BP.

i can see the profile and status quo of Malaysian specialized cuisine: char kuey teow, mee udang, beriani and laksa have skyrocketed and widened. It seems better off to build a career something like halal specialty cooks than being a white collar corporate citizens. It’s just a matter of keeping the environment tidy, implicitly picked up feedback from customers and on top of all never use black magic in restaurant business.
it is some kind of unique way to introduce Malaysia rather than promote the tourists with night life in our major cities.

Phillip…I have to love nasi baryani Md Shah before..but now I prefer nasi baryani at Pokok Sena..area Taman Batu Pahat. You can try it was more flavour and not too dry..Beef Baryani is the best I ever eat.It’s only RM 5.00..

Kak Nah ni memang dari batu pahat. Nasi Beriani Gam memang sinonim dengan keluarga kami. Bapa dan bapa saudara tukang masak nasi beriani gam di Bukit Batu, Batu Pahat Johor untuk kenduri kendara kerja kahwin ke…berkhatan ke…dan macam-macam rewang le. Arwah Hj Kemat dan Hj Bachok (Usuf) ketua masaknya. Nasi beriani mereka memang tak dapat lawan yang ada sekarang… mat shah ke, power taman soga ke… tak boleh kerana apa kerana kedua-dua tukang masak ini masak dengan HAPPY…IKHLAS….SEDEKAH SAJE…Mudah-mudahan Allah berkati mereka berdua dengan sedekah tenaga mereka dizamannya. Kami kini dah hilang sebahagian resepi tapi makan sendiri boleh le…buat niaga belum berhasrat lagi. Ada satu restoran berhampiran HOSPITAL BATU PAHAT yang mirip masakannya macam warisan HJ KEMAT dan HAJI BACHOK ni… alamat tak ingat cuma selalu pergi jika rindu NASI BERIANI GAM First Class tapi selalunya cepat sangat habis buka jam 11 pagi jam 2.00 petang yang gam tu dah habis. Yang tak gam jam 5-6 ptg ada lagi. Tengok nasib… OK apa pun jika beriani gam johor yang mesti bestnya NASI nye ada aroma beriani yang lembut-lembut wangi bukan macam mamak punya…kuat sangat bau spice nye. Kuah daging ke/ kambing ke/ayam ke/masak merah ke/sambal udang ke ikut le cita rasa masing-masing. Jika nasinya sedap…makan dengan lauk ayam goreng pun sedap. Makan cam tu pun sedap. Maka NASI BERIANI GAM JOHOR itu mesti cow pada nasinya… Wahaalahualam…

Beriyani ada macam2. Asal usul beriyani dari negara arab ke Afganistan > Pakistan > India then to Malaysia. Masing 2 ada kelebihan dan identiti rasa mengikut kaum. Pelopor nasi beriyani di BP bermula di era 1950an dari LATIFF RESTUARANT di Jln.Rahmat. Ini fakta. Tanyalah mereka yang senior.

Nasi beriyani kambing ker atau lembu ker ayam ker semuanya makanan berminyak dan terlalu berisiko untuk orang2 yang dah berumor terutamanya yang kena sakit jantung atau darah tinggi…….so pandai pandai ler kawal diri. Friends, beware 1 critical thing when you think of dining at his shop (Md.Shah). The stray cats found there!!!! Its eats everything left behind directly feeding from the plates!
No HYGIENE at all!!! Some of my friends went there to have that Beriyani tasted, but they came back without is just becuase of that DIRTY environment there. Just look at those walls. Not painted since ages and litter every where.
We should always try to avoid unhygienic food shops. Don’t you guys scared being hospitalized???
If this place been in Singapore. long ago it would have been closed shop permanently.

Ari tu masa balik BP makan nasi briyani Mat Shah. Yang tak sedapnya kat penghujung tu ada rasa klorin dari air paip. Potong stim. Slain dari tu ok jer. Oren jus, banyak gula kurang jus. Gelas ada sikit kotor yang melekat kat pemegang.

Memang Beriani Md Shah saya akui sedap. Tapi persekitaran meja makan di sana tidak berapa bersih, betul kan ? Saya selalu bungkus bawak balik sebab nak elakan drp gelas kotor, bau klorin dan maaf cakap la… kucing banyak sangat.Saya selalu teringat beriani daging semasa makan di majlis – majlis khas di Masjid Batu Pahat 1979-1983. Zaman tu ada imam Ali & imam Hisyam kalau tak silap.Saya juga selalu teringat masakan Beriani arwah Cikgu Mohamad bin Buntat-Kg.Bindu, Batu Pahat..

Jawa Johor…Apa yang Chisel Stone cakap tu memang betul. Bukan nak menjatuhkan Beriani Md Shah. Chisel Stone dah akui beriani md shah tu memang sedap. Tapi….terlalu ramai pelanggan yang komplen mengenai mengenai bau kekotoran kucing serta kotoran yang lain di kawasan meja makan di situ. Kalau tak percaya letakan lah peti aduan@cadangan di situ. Orang dah bagitahu kelemahan strategi perniagaan kita …kita kena cepat memperbaikinya dan jangan melenting. Hasilnya kita akan dapat lihat perniagaan orang Batu Pahat akan bertambah maju.

Tasik Y… betol kata2 awak tu. Apa gunanya makan sedap2 tapi selepas tu terus cari doktor atau makan pil poh chai. Kalau si Jawa gonjol ni pergi kat sana dudok kejap tengok keadaan betol2. Selepas jer orang makan kat situ kucing kurap akan melompat dan makan saki baki peninggalan pelanggan terus dari pinggan. Ini ker yang si Jawa gonjol ni kata enak??? Aku bukan nak kata Singapore tu lebih baik dari Batu Pahat tapi ada lagi kedai2 yang mengutamakan kesihatan dan persikitaran baik. Kalau si Jawa gonjeng tu nak makan dengan tahi kucing sekali pon lantak dia lah.

sebab kalau air rasa klorin tu…….macam mana eh?, agak md shah tak pakai paip SAJ kot ?. ada loji sendiri tu yang agaknya terlebih klorin.( komplen yang menunjukkan kebodohan diri sendiri yang tak tau macam mana sisitem befungsi ? )

MAIL, aku baca komen ko yang mula2 dulu.ko kata tempat tu kotor…..tapi ko beli tapau makan kat rumah ?& ko juga komen lousy MAJLIS tak ada inisiatif untuk jaga bangunan tu. tapi nape skarang nada ko lain? ko punya kedai baryani yg ko kata nak bukak tu dah bukak ke?. kita ni kalau nak meniaga hati kena baik be…….kalau ko buat yang sealiran gan md shah buat aje la. tak payah kondem2 orang. aku nak tengok gak kalau KEDAI ko pun teramat bersihnya. ( kalau ko jadi bukak kedai la sebagai yg ko tulis mula2 dulu )

Oooooops! Relax guys! Why should this good forum be turned into fighting ground?
I could see here pro and contras. Either Tasik Y or MailBP I think both of them means good for clean food. Money is ours Food is theirs so why should we be paying to eat something served not hygienically?
At the same time Beriyani Md.Shah I would like to say here it is one of the best taste ever in Beriyani. As we all already known that Beriyani is not a Malay Dish. It came from Arabs to Indians than to Malays from Indian Mamaks. This is truth. When a Malay cooks even better we should be proud of that.
Show some respect between Malays especially we are Muslims where we were stressed heavily in Persaudaraan, but not in Fighting among us.
Akhir Kata………Sokong semua kedai yang utamakan kebersihan as Mail BP said. It could be Md.Shah or any one else.
Just BOYCOTT any unhygenic shops and they will automatically go for rectification even if it is going to be involved with Majlis, Kesihatan or Jabatan Bekalan Air. So long we patronize dirty shops these TAKPER attitude will always be there.

Nadia….Biar mereka nak kata apa sekali pon. Saya salah seorang pengemar Gerai Md.Shah dari dulu lagi, malah minggu yang lepas pon saya makn kat gerai dia. Sekarang ni saya nampak Majlis dah mula celik. Seluroh bangunan dah dicat dengan warna kuning. Kebersihan sekarang jauh lebih baik dari dulu.
Sebagai seorang yang beragama Islam saya tahu apa yang saya katakan diatas.
Like what have been said by BPboy, eat only at clean place. Its has nothing got to do with Md.Shah. I still say his Nasi Beriyani is the best of the best!!!! I meant only on hygiene.

Guys, thanks for all the info.. I finally try both yesterday.. Mohd Shah dine-in, Biryani Power tapau & eat at Minyak Beku.. Below are my sincere comment :
1. Kedai Mohd Shah – Eating place not too convinience, a bit untidy..
2. Restoran Biryani Power – Very limited food, finished too early..
In term of delicious, both are GREAT! Im willing to give 5 (full) star to both.. As a biryani lover, both are fantastic!
Now i realised, Johor is really heaven of food.. Hope our exco could promote it wisely.. Wallahualah..

Sudara semua saya rasa ubahlah sikap bangsa kita yang begitu teruja untuk berhasad dengki sesama kaum yang sama menghadap arah kiblat yang sama dan menunaikan haji di Kota Makkah.
Berkaitan dgn komen sudara MailBp tersebut,rasanya ada kebenarannya.
1.Kebersihan premis wajar untuk beliau pertikaikan,sebagai ummat islam kita harus memahami bahawa kebersihan sebahagian drp iman!
Maka dari pemerhatian saya kebersihan di Medan Selera tersebut harus dinaiktaraf selaras dgn sajian juadah enak disana.
2.Kandungan MINYAK SAPI yang diketahui berkolestrol serta mempunyai kadar lemak tepu yang agak tinggi harus di ubah agar ianya akan memberi impak kesihatan yang lebih baik kpd pelanggan,kalu perlu gantikannya dgn Minyak jagung serta sedikit Minyak Zaiton.Barangkali rasanya mungkin lebih enak serta dapat menyelerakan semua golongan.
Kpd Pemilik Mat Shah maaf atas sedikit teguran ini.

akui n.beryani gam mat shah memang power,tp skrang ne mcm ada kurang sikit powernya mgkin tangan orang lain yg masak.bangsa kita tolong jgn byk PHD dalam diri. Hmmmmm…..nasi beriani yang saya masak sendiri jugak yang sedap. Makan kat kedai walaupun semua orang cakap sedap…(Batu pahat, kebun Teh, JB, JM Beryani semua rasa macam tak cukup bahan aja….Mana tak nya, bahan-bahan untuk nasi beriani dan lauk pauknya memang mahal. So expected le kalo rasa beriani kat kedai tidak sesedap yang masak sendiri.
Kalo nak beriani yang sedap, masak sendiri.

Yang you’re correct.Nasi Beriyani will be good if it is really hygienically prepared with own touch n care, but at the same time bulk cookings like usually in kenduri kahwin an so on has something extra taste which we normally will never get.This is all due to the big dapur and fire I think.

Betiyani tak tulin macam dulu,biasanya daging atau ayam akan masak berkukus bersama nasi baru sedap di makan,ada kuah sos dia yang khas dan dalca tulang dan lemak memamg best la,zaman kira kira 40 tahun yang lalu nasi beriyanu dijual pada harga RM 3.50 masa itu la.
