High School Class of ’65 Reunion DVD (on YouTube)
Remember the post here about the High School Batu Pahat Class of 65 reunion photos some time back? You have seen some photos. Do you want more?
I think those who attended the reunion dinner got a copy of the Commemorative DVD that was produced by Mr Chew Yang Hua.
Yang Hua has kindly uploaded the DVD to YouTueb so that everyone else can watch it as well. The DVD starts with photos of those who were in the same class in Primary School all the way to the recent photos.
Many of you might recognise people in it. You might see your parents, uncles or people you know in it. Enjoy!

In Part 4 there is a presentation of mentors. Does anyone know where Duncan Catling is from and how he got to HSBP?
Hi Larry, you must be the Peace Corp who taught in SDBL in the 70s. Although I never get to know you, I’ve met you before, I was a teacher there from 1979 till 1993. Duncan Catling was also an American Peace Corp who taught us in High School in 1964 and 1965. His whereabout now was not known. Some said that he was in the West Indies.
I watched all the videos with my mum. She knew some of the teachers.
Very touching to see those old photos, all the uncles were young and handsome boys before.
Good work, Mr. Chew!!
Yes, I taught at SDBL in 1975 and 1976. This was before you started teaching there, so we must have met somewhere else.
Travis Chew YH lives in the ‘Alamo’, daily singing his karaoke hits and how would he know the whereabouts of Duncan Catling? Last heard that he returned to US (Baltimore) after his HSBP experience. The guy must be well into his late sixties ’cause we were his students in Form 4 and we are already in our early sixties! Sorry, Larry, that’s the only lead I have for you.
Thank you Lulu for taking an interest in watching the Class ’65 Reunion DVD posted by Chew YH. He was assigned this responsibility to produce the commemorative DVD which we presented to all those who attended the reunion last year. It may surprise you and others that we took nearly 2 years to organize the reunion and produce this lovely memorable DVD. What surprised me more is the interest your mum took in watching the You-tube with you. Perhaps, she comes from that era too and know some of us? Try figuring out who I am from the photographs.
Thanks for the update, Genesis. I was mostly curious to know if he was a Yank or a Brit.
I believe that the Duncan Catling who taught you passed away in 1997, I believe, of cancer, in Baltimore.
Duncan Catling maybe gone, but those sweet memories of him will always remain in us. S.T Coleridge wrote : ‘To meet, to know, to love and to part is a sad tale of every a human heart’. For those of us who were taught by him in 1964-65, he will be fondly remembered and missed.
By the way, Joan, were you also a Peace Corp before?
Hi Mr.chew,
Thanks For Bringing Back Those Nostalgic Moments Of The 60′s…..I am from The class Of 70, and your Video Really brings back The memories Of The Good Old Days!!!….Nice Job Chew and Sad To Say That The State Of Our Old School ( And It’s Students Today ) Are In Dire Straits…..Gracias My Friend…..James.
Really bring back memories. Mr. Duncan was my 3 doors neighbour in Kg. Merdeka when he was teaching in HSBP. I remember that he kept a phyton in his house, one night the phyton managed to sneaked away into our house.
The phyton almost got killed by my brother. Luckily Mr. Duncan was awaken by the noise we created. So, the phyton was saved.
I remember that Mr.Duncan loves to rear wild animals as his pet.
I was in Std 6 Limpoon School at that time I can still remember that, he is not arrogant,he is friendly to my family and give us a lot of sweets and we sometimes borrow his bicycle for a joy ride.
May god bless his soul.
Mr Duncan was our teacher as well as our personal tutor at home. He thouroughly enjoyed the curries that mother cooked. Standing looking from the upstairs windiow of his arrival for tution. He was extremely kind hearted with pleasant mannerisms. The only tutor who did not use a cane unlike the locals. Would love to hear from anybody of this era and the greewat Mr. Duncan himself.
Kind regards Dialo, Jasbir & Karam
I was led to this site while Googling for an update on Duncan S. Catling whose 2-year stint in Batu Pahat High School teaching English literature had an enormous impact on my life. After Duncan left BP we maintained a regular correspondence that lasted till the early 1980s. The last time I actually saw Duncan was when I visited him in Baltimore in the fall of 1979 and stayed almost a week with him and his partner Donna. My correspondence with Duncan fizzled out a few years later because I realized we no longer saw eye-to-eye about everything and I was too opinionated to tolerate what I regarded as Duncan’s outmoded worldview. I was in my mid-thirties then and thought I’d live forever. So when I learnt through a facebook contact that Duncan had died some years ago, I felt rather sad that we never reconciled and renewed our deep friendship. In the end it matters not what any of us believes – or doesn’t – we’re all just humans doing the best we can, and each of us has immeasurable value as a human life, no matter what we accomplish or don’t. I’m pleased to note that Duncan is so fondly remembered by so many former students. He was indeed one of a kind as a teacher – the sort you only meet in movies like The Dead Poets’ Society or <To Sir, With Love.
I also wish to commend Travis Chew Yang Hua for putting so much time and effort into producing these charming and lovingly edited videos. Though I was from the Class of ’66, I remember many faces and names of my seniors in HSBP – especially Chua Soi Lek!
Those of you from HSBP who might like to keep in touch with me are welcome to do so via facebook (I’m listed as Antares M) or just email me. I’m also contactable via my blog.
Perhaps I should add that I wasn’t known as “Antares” back in the 1960s. Old schoolchums knew me by my given name “Kit Fong” (which I use only for official purposes since I became Antares in 1992).
To all ex-alumni of HSBP, known and unknown to me, I send blessings for a very beautiful life, full of love and joy and good humor!
Hi Antares,
It was good to read about your close encounter with Duncan Catling. He was my favourite literature teacher who made As You Like It come alive.
Which year were you in HSBP?
Do go to Youtube and search under “petersplim” for some old and recent videos regarding the batch of 65.
Here is one sample vid capturing the very essence of Elvis Presley in the person of Jimmy Lee Ah Kow who now resides in Singapore.
