I like Ali Asam Pedas near Batu bridge, opposite JJ snooker centre. It used to be a warong near pasar. After a fire destroyed the old shop, they shifted to the current place. They display a lot of portraits in the shop, such as: Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor, current Johor Sultan and Sultanah, Agung and Permaisuri, etc.

I like the fish head in asam pedas. It is really Pedas when hot. They add some traditional Malay herbs which gives an authentic and genuine taste to the gravy.

    Folks,

Would appreciate if you all can provide the exact address of all the 'die-die must eat' makan places in this forum. I've left BP for so long, but am planning a trip back asap. Having an address would be helpful when I carry out my hunting activities later.......

    Cheers!

    Restoran Perahu
No. 15, Lorong Satu Off Jalan Zabedah,
    83000 Batu Pahat, Johor

How to get there. Before the traffic lights to Jalan Rahmat, you will see a mini cute lil signboard 'Restoran Perahu' at the left side of the road leading to a junction. Turn in, the restaurant is at the end corner of the road.

Try this restaurant if you are willing to try some spicy seafood at night. I would recommend the ikan pari bakar, belacan bihun, hailam kwey teow and sambal sotong. Then wash it down with either the Lychee Juice or the Air Jambu with asam.

Welcome home, Chano. I am sure this website makes you sooooo tak boleh tahan that you MUST make a trip back. Haha... :)

How to go Ali Asam Pedas. Come down from Batu bridge, turn right into Jalan Rogayah. Pelican Hotel is on your left. Look for 1st turn on your right. After you turn in, Klinik Nur is on your left and a big Chinese Restaurant (forgot the name) is on your right. Go straight till you come to a T junction. Turn right. Go straight. You will see Ali Asam Pedas on your right.

A medium size fish head is much tastier than a large one.

There are a few places for the asam pedas other than the infamous Ali Asam Pedas. You can also try the stalls beside the old Cathay cinema, those are yummy too. I usually choose the 2nd one cause I find their fish are much fresher there as compared to the more crowded 1st stall.

There is another one at Jalan Shahbandar near to Jen Kwan Chicken Rice (this is the restaurant that is situated near the old jetty of the old Customs office beside the river).

tigersden, you mentioned Jen kwan. Is this the stand-alone Chinese/Malay restaurant next to the BP Glutton Square that used to serve very good satay? I remember there were lots of satay stores outside this restaurant during the 60s~70s. The restaurant was also the first to serve Coke Floats in BP. Am surprise to know it's now a Chicken Rice place......

Yes thats the place, but the place is more famous for its Chicken Rice now. The stall is chinese owned but the workers are malay so its deemed to be halal. Testament to that a lot of my malay friends have gone there. As for the satay there is one next to it that opens at night but I dunno how it taste cause I prefer the one at Glutton Square.

Jen Kwan still serves other fried dishes like nasi goreng kampung, nasi goreng cina, etc but I wouldnt recommend it, just go there for their Chicken Rice is sufficient.

By the way the Chicken Rice stall only opens for lunch.

Thanks! There used to be a Hainanese chicken rice shop at Jalan Sultanah but it shifted to a place opposite Kampong Istana. That shop was 'world-famous' in BP. Any idea if it's still operating? Ah Piow's at Glutton Square is so-so, but I dislike his attitude.

Will definitely go for Jen Kwan's when I make my comeback.......

LONTONG at 'lao piak', erm... that's Taman Nira or is it Taman Batu Pahat, I think.
I don't know the exact address nor direction. I always agak-agak and stumble my way there...

But it's near the bridge. You know, if you pass the bridge, coming from Muar's direction, turn left after the traffic light (left turn is Pelican Hotel). Then at the junction, turn left again and go straight. Then turn right after some tyre shops and erm... I can't be sure liao.

    Anyone has any ideas?

There are quite a few Pisang Goreng stalls in Batu Pahat, but everyone has their own favourite:

    1. Kampung Merdeka Version
    2. BP Garden Version (The stall next to the Shell Petrol Station)
    3. The Tanjung Laboh Version, (the old shack opposite the Sea Food Restaurant before Jalan Limpoon)
    4. The Bomba Version (Next to the old Firehouse, their Keledek is huge)
    5. The other not so good version which usually sprout in every other housing estates, usually with a coconut drink stall. Hehe.

Speaking of Nasi Briyani, I dislike the Mohd Shah's version as it has become too oily to my liking. I prefer the following shops

    1. Nasi Briyani Power in Taman Soga (the road to hospital batu pahat, make a right turn at the mini roundabout, go straight till you see the new shops, somewhere in there, if you see the food court, you overshot the turn).
    2. Nasi Briyani Gam in Taman Bukit Pasir (same row as Daddy's Village)
    3. Nasi Briyani biasa served in a stall in Taman Batu Pahat (next to the horribly green Suzuki Building - edit its now the horribly blue Mazda building). This one is much cheaper than the above two and there is always plenty of rice leftovers cause they give you a lot. No worries of, Bang~ Tambah Nasi!!
    4. Nasi Briyani served in Young Recipe Restaurant (exactly behind Old Cheng Siu, opposite Ah O lobak rice shop or 2 doors away from the corner fruit shop). I wouldnt say this shop is halal cause I dont see any certification but the food is cooked by a Malay.

Lets do desserts, anyone here missed the indian guy who cycles his stall around town serving up freshly cooked Terigu (Bek) and Pulut Hitam (Or Chut Bi).

yeah.......do remember the terigu man. Used to buy a bowl from him too......reckon he was the one and only guy selling it. Didn't know of anyone else doing the same trade.

Also, can you folks remember the Indian kacang putih man at the BP fountain? I like the way he rolls up a small piece of newspaper into a cone for the kacang. There were about 5~6 varieties of kacangs then; my fav was the fried groundnuts that costs only 5 sen a scoop......

    Gone are the days.....

My mum stopped buying the kacang putih when the newspaper cone became smaller and smaller...

Hehehe, that's a sign of zaman inflasi; nowadays we no longer pay 5 sen anymore. Btw, how much is a packet of kacang in BP now? Don't think we can even find anymore authentic Indian types anymore.

There used to be a kacang factory at Jalan Mustapha churning out very delicious flavoured coated nuts (can't remember the brand) and I bought heaps of them for my kawans in S'pore......considering the exchange rate, it was 'bery bery cheep'.

I dont think that kacang putih man is among us anymore, its been so long since I last saw him. Even the regular roti men who rides the motor with their wares has dwindled in numbers here.

Hmm less depressing talk, check out the new western eatery outside of CIMB (formerly Bumiputra Commerce Bank), along Jalan Rahmat, good food ... reasonable price (halal too). This is only for those who crave for western food and not those who are in countries where the sheeps and cows outnumbers the human population *Grins*, I am sure you people there are sick of those food already and wish to come back for the Batu Pahat fares that you crave so much ....

    tigersden,

You are right, I'm dying of BP food.........when I left BP, there wasn't any 'fulltime' western eatery. It's a good sign that BP is getting more cosmopolitan. Anyway, in 2 weeks' time, the M'sian Tourism Board is organising a big carnival in Auckland. Hopefully, I can make it to savour some M'sian fares. You can check this out at: http://malaysiacarnival.org.nz

Talking about the CIMB at Jalan Rahmat, if I'm right, there's this Bee Bee bread shop that used to sell the best beef curry puff. At 50 sen a piece during the 70s, it was a gourmet treat......is it still around?

Bee Bee Bakery is still around, third generation already running the shop. There are other nice roti shops around Batu Pahat like Han Kee Bakery infamous for their roti bakar with egg and otak-otak. Then Kim Leng Bakery with their cream puffs. Family Cakehouse and Seasons among others too,(Famous for what I dunno), and one small bakery in Taman Soga which sells nice chicken floss bread.

The kacang factory along Jalan Mustafa is the Butterfly Kacang factory. Its still opened and they still sell their products from the factory itself. Come back soon and bring loads back, its still cheap after conversion. Come to think of it, everything here is cheap here after conversion, he he he....

coz, anywhere i go, i'll cheap cheap cheap (chip chip chip).. until my mum cannot tahan.. haha~

there is also another trend now very hot in BP.. those "coffee shop".. "Old Town Coffee Shop" lahh.. then wat "Rengit Coffee Shop" lahh.. went to limteh last friday n saturday.. surprisingly that all the used to be the hotspot and famous mamak stalls are no longer pack with ppl.. especially the Jln Omar bus stand.. ppl now are moving towards tmn bukit pasir, maju, flora that area..

hmm.. maybe these so called high class coffee shops are the preparation for BP ppl to welcome the arrival of starbucks and coffee bean??

Its probably a passing phase, not all of Batu Pahat people are prepared to fork out more than RM5.00 for a cuppa. This phase started out with those small cafes then dagan cafe, old town ipoh white coffee, rengit coffee and now a new one in tmn bukit pasir called old taste ipoh white coffee (whose layout is similar to old town).

Coffee beans from Rengit & Senggarang areas are the best. There used to be several coffee bean processing factories in these areas during the 70s. The coffee powder from these factory were unadulterated & 100% pure.........

Having my fills of Starbucks, CB, Robert Harris & whatsnots, I could never get the authentic taste of BP kopi O. Especially when it was 'couriered' in the good old days, stored in recycle condensed milk cans.......

You can still find authentic BP kopi O but tapau in plastic bags rather than condensed milk cans nowadays. Try the old big market coffeeshops, and if you want to buy u can still get those 333 coffee powders.

Dagan cafe serves Senggarang white coffee, thats as authentic as you can get around here (but I have been getting not very good reviews about the place - try at your own will). I am not a coffee drinker cause no matter how much I drink I still sleep very well. The thicker the coffee, the faster it sends me to slumberland.
